Dan Reingold, President & Chief Executive Officer - RiverSpring Living

About Dan:

Daniel Reingold is President & Chief Executive Officer of River’s Edge, New York City’s first and only Life Plan Community, and part of RiverSpring Living. Previously, he served as President & Chief Executive Officer of RiverSpring Living. Under Reingold’s tenure, RiverSpring Living grew significantly from an organization of about $100 million serving 1,000 people daily to about $1.2 billion serving 18,000 daily. As a passionate advocate for older adults, Reingold and his team opened the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Center for Elder Justice, the nation’s first elder abuse shelter. He’s also shared his passion and dedication by previously serving boards of the Continuing Care Leadership Coalition (CCLC), the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) and is currently on the Association of Jewish Aging Services (AJAS) board in which he previously chaired. He received a BA from Hobart College, an MSW from Columbia University, and a law degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University. In recognition of his leadership and service, he was the winner of the LeadingAge Award of Honor, the Association of Jewish Aging Services Dr. Herbert Shore Award, and the LeadingAge New York Lawrence Larson award.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dan through the LeadingAge Larry Minnix Leadership Academy where he served as a coach. Not only did he readily share his experience, his wisdom and passion for our field, but also his unique sense of humor and insights. He has been recognized by many in the field for his strong leadership, vision, dedication and strong work ethic, so it was no surprise he didn’t have one, but two book recommendations to share.

Book Recommendation: “Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in Our Busy Lives” & “Leadership Lessons of Ulysses S. Grant”

Why you like it:

Sabbath teaches us something very important: The concept of rest and renewal is not a concept leaders often think about. We’re way more stressed out than we used to be. It’s about self-care. In our field, we take care of people’s lives, but are we taking care of ourselves? Take a look at colleagues: we’re tired, not exercising, drinking, etc. It’s an area we can all focus more on.

Near the end of his life, Ulysses was dying and broke. for this and, probably, various other reasons, he decided to write his memoirs. So he wrote them in last years of his life. The author then took the memoirs and applied leadership lessons to them. E.g. except of a battle à takes snippets of history and what can leaders learn from it.

Some key concepts:

Sabbath:

  1. The need for rest: In a culture obsessed with productivity, taking time for rest is essential for physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Rest is not a luxury but a necessity.

  2. Sacred time: Sabbath is more than just a day off; it is a sacred pause, a time to reconnect with ourselves, others, and the divine. Our commitment to make it “sacred” and not push it off.

Ulysses:

  1. Selecting Effective Team Members: Grant believed that the most efficient service comes from individuals who wait to be selected rather than those who actively seek positions. Holton interprets this to mean that those eager for promotion may miss out on relevant and defining work experiences

  2. Applying Military Strategies to Business: The book draws parallels between Grant's military tactics and strategies and their application in modern business and everyday life, providing practical lessons for contemporary leaders

How can it help senior living leaders:

As leaders, we are used to giving our all to those we serve, but often don’t prioritize taking care of ourselves. And if we do, we usually don’t protect the time we do take. They also remind us to keep our minds open to insights and inspiration, even from people or places you may not think they’d come from.
